Riding this big hunk of steel frees me from the daily grind and occupies my mind with little else than being in the moment.Rik van Gerwen , Bridgestone motorcycle rider
Episode 3 of Gripping Stories takes us to Austria. Steeped in history and embossed with natural beauty, Austria is an excellent escape for motorcyclists. Our narrator, Rik van Gerwen, describes the thrill of riding through the country and how a rider can smell a hint of pine, and perhaps even, schnitzel. Taking a cue from his stomach, he makes a quick pit stop at a local restaurant to learn more about Austrian cuisine, and sample the famed breaded and battered meat dish.
Back on the road, van Gerwen shares how a motorcycle is more than a hunk of steel, but a way for him to escape the daily grind of life and appreciate the present. Another person who views steel as an escape or perhaps even as salvation is Alex. Alex is a welder and artist who creates deconstructed steel cubes and used his work to overcome depression and gain back his personal freedom.
Alex invites van Gerwen along to learn more about his story of recovery during a tour of his studio and a demonstration of how he creates his cubes. In the end, we learn these cubes are more than an art project. They’re symbolic of how experiences during a lifetime can shape and mould a person, but they their freedom will still exist.
With a heart full of fuel, van Gerwen puts his tyres to the test in the Austrian countryside. Here, mountains become playgrounds, passion becomes speed, and he’s on his way to becoming a ridiculously happy traveller.
Home to one of the world's biggest motorcycle races, the Suzuka Circuit is the first full-scale international racing course in Japan. Racers Katsuyuki Nakasuga, Alex Lowes and Michael van der Mark share what it's like to pilot a motorcycle around the famous 6km course and how they master the intricate corners to gain a competitive edge.
In this episode of Gripping Stories, we’ll dive into the story of Emiliano Malagoli, and how his motorcycle accident changed the course of his life forever and for the better. Learn how his organisation Di.Di., helps disabled motorists enjoy the thrill of racing and educates children about road and tyre safety.
