Why a smarter use of resources is the real future of smarter mobility

Through our CSR strategy, Our Way to Serve, at Bridgestone we’re leveraging all of our strengths – from our global network, industry leadership, pioneering spirit to our thousands of employees worldwide – to improve the efficiency of our portfolio, while saving resources and reducing our collective carbon footprint.

That’s because, as a global industry leader, we know we have a responsibility to contribute to a more sustainable future. In fact, it’s a priority if we want to help achieve the United Nations Development Programme’s (UNDP) global goal to reduce CO2 emissions by 45 percent between 2010 and 2030, and reach net zero around 2050.

Here are some examples of how Bridgestone is doing more with less…

Engineering fuel efficient tyres

Reducing fuel consumption, as well as total cost of ownership, is key for us at Bridgestone. Between 2005 and 2018, we managed to reduce the rolling resistance of our tyre portfolio by 21 percent to significantly improve the fuel efficiency our products provide.

Fuel economy is particularly important to our fleet customers, which is why we’re proud to be leading the charge with our Ecopia H002 tyres. They’ve been engineered to minimise rolling resistance to reduce fuel consumption and consequently fuel bills and carbon emissions, without compromising on safety or tyre life.

According to the results of a long-haul fuel consumption test we did in collaboration with MAN ProfiDrive®, trucks fitted with Ecopia H002 tyres use 11.4 percent less fuel than trucks fitted with C-labelled regional operation tyres. This represents an important environmental benefit but also a financial one – approximatively a €5,000 saving per truck, per year1 .

When it comes to fuel efficient tyres, our Ecopia H002 tyres may be ahead of the game, but that doesn’t mean we’ve stopped striving for further success…

Using less base materials to build products

Launched earlier this year, Enliten is an innovative lightweight tyre technology that enables passenger tyres to be reduced in weight by, on average, 10 percent2. This not only ensures that less raw materials are used to manufacture the tyres, but also contributes to the reduced rolling resistance of tyres made with the groundbreaking material – on average, 20 percent3.

By providing these benefits, tyres made with Enliten technology can help reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions in combustion vehicles and extend battery life and vehicle range in electric vehicles, all without compromising on tyre wear or road safety.

We’re also helping our fleet customers to reduce both their CO2 output and costs by…

Pioneering cutting-edge digital solutions

Of course, our digital mobility solutions are also enabling a smarter use of resources – for fleets especially. As well as environmental implications, fuel currently accounts for 25-30 percent of all fleet related costs4. Today, as we strengthen our digital capabilities, we’re constantly evolving our portfolio of digital solutions to work alongside our fuel efficient tyres and help fleets address this challenge. And now, alongside our three-in-one digital maintenance solution, FleetPulse, we’re also providing fleet management services under the Webfleet Solutions banner.

Acquired by Bridgestone Europe in early 2019, the company formerly known as TomTom Telematics works to improve transparency into vehicle usage to help fleets better manage their fuel consumption. Webfleet Solutions’ flagship product, WEBFLEET, is the solution that brings this to life. WEBFLEET notifies drivers and fleet managers if it identifies any diagnostics issues in a vehicle, and also shares real-time and historical data on fuel consumption. These features combine to ensure that any vehicle issue impacting fuel efficiency, such as underinflated tyres, can be immediately spotted and rectified.

Resourceful thinking for a smarter future

Shifting gears is essential for sustainable mobility, and the future of both our industry and society. By developing smarter, cleaner and more sustainable products, solutions and technologies, we’re benefitting ourselves, our customers, our partners, and the environment. We look forward to continuing this sustainable journey.
1Test carried out by MAN Profidrive drivers in collaboration with BSEMEA. 3 same MAN trucks (MAX TGX X-Line) fitted with Krone semi-trailers drove from Munich to Aprilia on 13 & 14th of May. Bridgestone H002 compared to Bridgestone regional range (RS1+/RD1+/R168) in 315/70R22.5 steer, drive and 385/55R22.5 trailer fitment. Fuel cost results simulated using the indexed fuel consumption values following the assumption set for one long haul truck doing average mileage of 130.000km and average fuel consumption of 25lt/km.
