Severn Freewheelers provide a crucial service delivering blood and other essential medical items between NHS facilities. Their Bike Manager, Derek Price, gives his views on the Bridgestone Battlax BT-023.
SevernFreewheelers are a member of the Nationwide Association of Blood Bikes (NABB). A Charity that provides NHS hospitals with a free Urgent/Emergency ‘out of hours’ motorcycle courier service that operates 365days a year using BMW R1200RTs ridden by volunteer riders.
‘We are currently responding to over 400 calls a month. It’s not unusual for our motorcycles to cover over 1000miles a week, which as you can imagine means we get through a lot of tyres. Since fitting BT-023s to our 6 bike fleet I’ve had no complaints about tyres squaring off, in fact I’ve had no complaints at all.
Our riders like the fact that the grip, handling characteristics and ride quality remain consistent, (important if you’re to have confidence responding to a call at 2am in the middle of January). Remarkably there seems to be no trade off between grip and wear rate. We recently replaced a set of BT-023s that had worn down to 2mm purely as a precaution because of the amount of rain we’ve been having and discovered that they had covered 8839 miles. We could have probably got another 1000miles out of them before they became illegal.
Most of our riders who need a sports/touring tyre now choose to fit BT023s to their own bikes’.
