Marc Marquez clinched the MotoGP™ title and marked the successful completion of Bridgestone’s twelfth season in MotoGP™ and its sixth as Official Tyre Supplier to the series.
On November 10th, the breath-taking championship decider at Valencia’s Circuito Ricardo Tormo saw Repsol Honda’s Marc Marquez clinch the MotoGP™ title and marked the successful completion of Bridgestone’s twelfth season in MotoGP™ and its sixth as Official Tyre Supplier to the series.
The continuing growth of MotoGP™ was evident in the number of full-time entries lining up on the grid for this year swelling to 24 riders, which was a record for the MotoGP™ era. With the series going down to the wire, the arrival of Marquez, Rossi’s return to Yamaha, and reigning champion Jorge Lorenzo putting in heroic performances including riding to fifth place at Assen with a broken collarbone, the total attendance figure for MotoGP™ for 2013 was 2,433,763 – the highest ever recorded.
The stand-out performer this season was Repsol Honda’s Marc Marquez who became only the second premier-class rider to win the championship title in his rookie year. Marquez’s other record-breaking achievements this year include:
• Youngest rider to score a MotoGP™ pole position
• Youngest ever MotoGP™ race winner
• Youngest rider to score back-to-back premier-class victories
• First MotoGP™ rookie to score four consecutive victories
• First premier-class rookie to win more than five races in a season
• Record number of points scored (334) by a rookie rider
• Youngest ever MotoGP™ World Champion
It was also a record-breaking year for Bridgestone and tyre performance was overall still exemplary this year. The unrivalled levels of grip offered by Bridgestone BATTLAX MotoGP™ tyres allowed riders to unlock the full potential of their MotoGP™ machines, resulting in eleven qualifying lap records and ten race lap records being set during the 2013 season.
A number of new tyre developments introduced throughout the season from Bridgestone delivered higher levels of safety and performance. A brand new Extra-Hard compound wet tyre was introduced at the second round of the season at Jerez. A new super-soft rear slick for the CRT-class riders was introduced for the Japanese Grand Prix at Motegi, while a new specification hard rear slick made a successful debut at the season finale at Valencia.
The post-season test that concluded at Valencia last week was the first chapter of the 2014 season, as the data acquired from the sessions will be analysed at Bridgestone’s Technical Centre in Kodaira, Japan to help steer tyre development for the 2014 season.
